Kahwatsiraién:ton
is a grassroots project, birthed from Oherò:kon "Under the Husk" rites of passage ceremony, designed specifically to support and pour love, knowledge, and language into our Onkwehón:we families.
We do this through a variety of cultural teachings and practices, workshops, talking circles, individual and group workshops and mentoring.
How are we funded?
Currently we are funded by a multi-year grant thru the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). The mission of OTF is to build healthy and vibrant communities throughout Ontario by investing in community-based initiatives and strengthening the impact of Ontario's non-profit sector.
About
Our partnership with Scholastic books has brought over 4,000 books and activity kits to Ahkwesáhsne. Books have been distributed at local daycares, ABME Schools and Daycares, St. Regis Mohawk School, SRMT Family Advocacy Program, MCA Covid response program and the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club.
To be added to our distribution list this year please email: kahwatsiraienton@gmail.com.
Air Miles Canada is currently supporting two part time students to work with Kahwatsiraién:ton in support of our social media and office needs and a second student to work in the gardens.
Thru OTF Emergency Grants we have been able to create safer spaces for our staff, and support both local contractors and caterers to provide hundreds of free home made meals to our community members over the past winter months.
